Southern Romance Holiday and Accommodation plan
Southern Romance

A five day romantic getaway in the lower South Island:

Queenstown, Milford Sound, Lake Hawea, Wanaka

The natural surrounds and spectacular, uncrowded scenery of the South Island provide a perfect formula for romantic getaway or honeymoon.

Day One:  QueenstownMilford Sound overnight and return

A scenic flight over the Southern Alps to Milford Sound followed by an overnight nature cruise is the perfect start to some quality time together. Kayak next to dolphins in their natural habitat, witness the spectacular waterfalls descending from the walls of the fiords and enjoy a romantic dinner above the water.

Day Two: Queenstown – Lake Hawea 1 hour:

Take your time heading over the Crown Range to Hawea, or go via Cromwell and sample the many wineries in the area. Once you arrive at Lake Hawea, take a walk along the lake shore or into the township for a glass of wine at the local café.

Lake Hawea Accommodation: Lake Hawea Holiday Park is right on the lake and offers stunning mountain views. Uncrowded with established trees and a park like setting, you’ll find plenty of solitude and privacy for some time out together.

Day Three: Lake Hawea - Haast and Jackson’s Bay trip for the day 2-1/2 hours each way:

A day trip to the wild natural beauty of the west coast is a great way to unwind together. The road to Jackson’s Bay south of Haast has a number of stop- offs you can make and you can enjoy fresh fish and chips at the caravan at the end of the road. On the way back be sure to stop at the Blue Pools just before Makarora before settling into another relaxing evening at Lake Hawea.

Day 4: Lake Hawea – Matukituki River Valley day trip:

The road into Mt Aspiring Park up the Matukituki Valley takes you into the heat of the Southern Alps.  If you’re feeling active, a hike up to Rob Roy glacier will give you stunning views of high alpine scenery and for a relaxed outing, the walk up to Diamond Lake provides views back over Lake Wanaka.

Day 5: Queenstown:

Consider the huge range of options for a day in Queenstown. Adventure activities, a boat trip across the lake on the steam powered Earnslaw, or just a relaxed drive up to Glenorchy.

Evening drinks or dinner at the top of the Skyline Gondola with views of the Remarkables and the lights of Queenstown will be a perfect finish to the day.

Queenstown Accommodation: Treat yourself to a night at the Sofitel in downtown Queenstown - their large spa baths provide a perfect start to the evening!
