Christchurch, Franz Josef, Lake Hawea, Queenstown, Tekapo

A South Island family holiday is a treat for everyone, from the wild rain forests and glaciers of the west coast to the exciting activities and outdoor adventures of Hawea, Wanaka and Queenstown and great with great accommodation choices.

Day One:  Christchurch- Fox Glacier 5- 6 hours:

Head out on SH 73 with the rolling farmland giving way to the foothills of the Southern Alps and the winding road over Arthurs Pass and down into Hokitika. Have a break with a visit to the national kiwi centre with guaranteed viewing of the iconic nocturnal bird.

Fox Glacier Accommodation: Fox Glacier Holiday Park is a family friendly motorcamp handy to the town amenities.

Tim’s tip:
Take your family on a treasure hunt! The small community of Ross is 20 minutes south of Hokitika and has gold panning for the public at the information centre. www.ross.org.nz

Day Two: Fox Glacier - Lake Hawea, 5 hours:

Consider a heli-trip in the morning for a snow landing on the glacier or drive to the viewing carpark at Fox Glacier before setting off along the coast toward Haast Pass and your destination for the night, Lake Hawea Holiday Park.

Lake Hawea Accomodation: The campground has been a kiwi family favourite for generations and under 5’s are free!  Sited right on the lake shore, the kids will have a ball exploring the park like grounds and splashing about in the water while you relax and enjoy the view. As part of the Holiday Parks network, members ( you can sign up at the camping ground office) receive a 10% discount.

Tim’s tip: Family fishing trip - enquire at the Holiday Park reception for local operators.

Day Three: Lake Hawea day trip to Queenstown, 1 hour:

Take some time out to explore the Hawea - Wanaka area or head straight over the hill. The Toy and Fighter Pilots museum are next to each other at Wanaka airport and there are a number of family friendly operators in the area for boat trips, rafting and scenic flights.

The large commercial tourist resort of Queenstown offers a huge range of adventure activities. Take your pick from the options for jetboating, rafting, lake trips or the luge.

Tim’s tip:  Lose the family! Puzzling World at the entrance to Wanaka township will entertain and bewilder the family for hours. The tilted house, tumbling towers, following faces and the giant labyrinth of a maze will entertain all ages.

Day 4: Lake Hawea – Tekapo 4 hours:

The drive to Tekapo passes through the high country of the Mackenzie basin.  Stop by the salmon farm near Twizel for some supplies of smoked or fresh fish and watch the feeding frenzy when you sprinkle crumbs on the water.

The township of Tekapo is the home of the internationally regarded Mt John Observatory which has a café with fantastic views over the Mackenzie country. As the evening draws near you can take time out relaxing in the recently built hot pools overlooking the lake.

Lake Tekapo Accomodation: Lake Tekapo Motorcamp and Motels are right on the lake and a short walk into the township.

Tim’s tip:  Air Safaris has one of the best scenic flights in the country with their Grand Traverse over Mt Cook giving a fantastic perspective of the glaciated alpine terrain.

Day 5: Tekapo – Christchurch 4-5 hours:

Time to unwind as you head back to Christchurch.  The townships of Fairlie and Geraldine provide a relaxed rural environment for stopovers and refreshments as well as number of scenic picnic spots  As it’s the last day, treat everyone to a visit to Geraldine’s, unique ‘food court’ with it’s cheese makers outlet, chocolate shop and numerous other  tasty delicacies.

Christchurch Accomodation: Easy to find on SH 1, North South Holiday Park is part of the Family Parks network and away from the bustle of downtown Christchurch.

Tim’s tip: A detour west from Mt Somers toward Lake Clearwater takes you into Mesopotamia Station and Lord of the Rings country.
